What is Challenger II?
Challenger II is a program
for young adults in God's Church. It is designed to take a small,
select group of young adults (usually 12-15) who are serious about
their commitment to God's truth and Church, and give them focused
leadership training in an outdoor setting. Each program revolves around
a close mentoring dynamic with a small group of ministers and other
adult leaders. The purpose is to provide both physical and spiritual
training to teachable young adults who desire to grow in godly character,
leadership skills and the ability to serve others.
Participants learn practical outdoor and adventure skills,
as well as how to be better prepared for the future—in terms
of both challenges and service opportunities. Both are on the horizon
for young adults in God's Church today. Prophecy shows that the Church
of God will soon enter turbulent waters; its future pillars and leaders
will need the skills, courage and maturity to navigate
those waters.
This is one reason Challenger II programs are in an
outdoor wilderness or challenge-type setting. Valuable lessons are
learned by stepping outside one's comfort zone and accepting
challenges, discomfort, spartan living conditions, and even the unknown.
But it's not all a sacrifice of comforts. Each Challenger II program
takes participants out of their normal, every-day lives and brings
them into an inspiring setting, free from the distractions of the
world, and teaches lessons drawn from the wilderness setting. Memories
of a dramatic, positive experience help to cement other lessons imparted
during the course of the experience.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How physically fit must I be to participate?
Most people of reasonably good health should be able to participate.
However, applicants should understand that Challenger II is designed
to be physically challenging. Applicants must complete a health history
and a 12-minute test and must have clearance from a medical professional
to participate in the program. Some programs, such as the Wind Rivers
Wilderness Expedition, will require significant cardiovascular conditioning
well in advance.
Do I have to be baptized to apply?
Challenger II is for those who are serious about their calling and
spiritual life and want to grow in their ability to serve God. Baptism
is not required, but both baptized and un-baptized young adults
can expect to be challenged to greater spiritual growth. Those who
are not interested in being mentored by ministers and other adults
in a spiritually-focused, 'iron-sharpening-iron' experience
will be frustrated and need not apply. Applicants should have a
desire to be an active part of the Church, and to assist with the
work of the Church.
Will
I need any special gear or equipment?
The program director will inform you of any items you will be expected
to provide, but most major expense items and gear will generally be
provided by Challenger II.
Do I need prior experience?
Previous experience is not required. Those with experience
in our United Youth Camp programs will, however, be able to take the
skills they've learned to the "next level."
